Girl Scout FAQs

  • Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is the national organization in this country.  It is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).  The headquarters of GSUSA is located in New York City, NY.
  • Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital (GSCNC) is the organization of Girl Scouts which serves D.C., part of Maryland, part of Virginia, and part of West Virginia.  Find out more at the website www.gscnc.org.
  • Service Units are geographic groups of troops served by volunteers and supported by staff members of GSCNC.  The troops represented on this website are part of Service Unit 60-1 which serves most of the troops based at schools and churches in Arlington, Virginia, south of Rte 50 (Arlington Boulevard).
  • Associations are made up of several Service Units.  We are part of Association 60, Pride of the Potomac, which encompasses all of Arlington County and the City of Alexandria.
  • Every girl is welcome!  We try to maintain Girl Scouting for every interested girl.  We are limited by meeting space availability, willing and trained parent or other adult volunteers, and number of girls per troop.  Girls can be Juliettes - the designation for a girl who pursues Girl Scouting without belonging to a troop.  Juliettes are welcomed at many events presented by GSCNC and by local Service Units and Associations.  Girl Scout registration costs $25 per year, and financial assistance is available for families who need it.  Girl Scouts who have registered make the Girl Scout Promise, which completes the process of becoming a Girl Scout.
  • Where the girl lives or goes to school doesn't restrict troop membership.  Our troops have girls from several different areas, and troops also welcome home-schooled girls.
  • Adults are welcome, too!  Every troop needs adult volunteers.  Although parents have traditionally filled volunteer roles, many non-parents - college students, retired persons, interested neighbors and relatives - have also enjoyed becoming part of a Girl Scout family.  Every girl activity requires two attending unrelated adults, one of whom must be female.  The GSCNC website has information on how to apply to become a Girl Scout volunteer.
  • Adult Training is free and required.  Volunteer Girl Scout trainers offer basic classes to help a new leader as well as specialized training in camping, canoeing, backpacking, etc.  Volunteers other than leaders are also offered training, such as for Troop Cookie Manager, Troop Treasurer, etc.  The GSCNC website has details regarding required training.  Volunteers also offer enrichment classes in popular subjects such as knot-tying, songs & games, and geocaching. Classes for volunteers who accept appointment to positions beyond the troop such as Service Unit Registrars, Association Chairs, and Cookie Sale Managers are scheduled as needed.
