The Advancement Trail


On the advancement trail, a Cub Scout progresses from rank torank, learning new skills as they goes. Each of the ranks and awards inCub Scouting has its own requirements. As you advance through the ranks,the requirements get more challenging, to match the new skills andabilities you learn as you get older. For more information onadvancement, visit CubScouts.org.

Lion

Cub Scouting is all about adventure! To earn their rank badge, Lion Cub Scouts complete five “adventures,” which are collections of themed, multidisciplinary activities. They may also complete fun elective adventures. Below, you’ll find the exact requirements for each Lion Cub Scout adventure.

Complete each of the following Lion Required Adventures with your den or family:

  • Lion’s Honor
  • Fun on the Run
  • Animal Kingdom
  • Mountain Lion
  • King of the Jungle


Bobcat

No matter what age or grade a child joins Cub Scouting, they must earn the Bobcat badge before advancing to the rank of Tiger, Wolf, Bear,or Webelos. A child must complete the Bobcat requirements, which include:

  • Learn and say the Cub Scout motto, the Scout Oath, and the Scout Law and tell what they mean;
  • Show the Cub Scout sign, salute, and handshake and tell what they mean; and
  • With a parent or guardian complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide.

Tiger

The Tiger rank is for kids who are in first grade or are age 7. Toearn the Tiger badge, a child must complete six required adventures with their den or family and one elective adventure of their den or family’schoosing. As the child completes each adventure, they will receive theadventure loop for that adventure, which they can wear on their belt. Whenthe child has completed the seven required adventures, they can receive theTiger badge. The Tiger badge is given to the child’s adult partner at apack meeting. Then, during a grand ceremony, the adult gives the badgeto the child.

After they have earned the Tiger badge, a Tiger Scout can work on theremaining 12 Tiger electives until they finish first grade (or turns 8years old). They can choose elective adventures that may show newhobbies and teach skills that will be useful during their big Scoutyears. When they complete an elective adventure, the child receives anadditional adventure loop to wear on their belt.


Wolf

The Wolf rank is for children who have finished first grade (or who are 8years old). To earn the Wolf badge, a child must complete six requiredadventures and one elective adventure. Their parent or guardian and denleader approves each requirement by signing his book, and the boyreceives an adventure loop for each adventure. When the child has met allrequirements, the Wolf badge is presented to their parent or guardian atthe next pack meeting. During an impressive ceremony, the parent orguardian then presents the badge to the child.

After they have earned the Wolf badge, a Wolf Scout can work on theremaining 12 Wolf electives until they finish second grade (or turn 9years old). They can choose elective adventures that may show newhobbies and teach skills that will be useful during their big Scoutyears. When they complete an elective adventure, the child receives anadditional adventure loop to wear on their belt.


Bear

The Bear rank is for kids who have finished second grade (or who are 9years old). To earn the Bear badge, a child must complete six requiredadventures and one elective adventure. Their parent or guardian and denleader approves each requirement by signing their book, and the child receives an adventure loop for each adventure. When the child has met allrequirements, the Bear badge is presented to their parent or guardian atthe next pack meeting. Webelos

Webelos dens are for kids who have completed third grade (or reachedage 10). Webelos Scouts get to work on the five required Webelosadventures and choose two of the 18 elective adventures that are sharedby the Webelos and Arrow of Light ranks. 

When a child has completed the requirements for an adventure, the Webelos denleader, rather than a parent, approves most of the adventures. For eachadventure a child completes, they receive a pin to wear on the Webeloscolors or on their hat. After completing seven adventures, including fiverequired adventures and two elective adventures, a Scout can receive theWebelos badge.

After they have earned the Webelos badge, a Webelos Scout can work onthe remaining 18 shared Webelos and Arrow of Light electives until they finish fourth grade (or turns 11 years old). They can choose electiveadventures that may show new hobbies and teach skills that willbe useful during their big Scout years. When they complete an electiveadventure, they receive an additional adventure pin to wear on theWebelos colors or on their hat.


Arrow of Light

The highest rank in Cub Scouting is the Arrow of Light. Earning thisrank prepares a Webelos Scout to become a big Scout. Scouts mustcomplete four required adventures and three elective adventures to earnthe Arrow of Light rank. For each adventure a scout completes, they receivesa pin to wear on the Webelos colors or on their hat.

The Arrow of Light badge is the only Cub Scout badge that can be wornon the big Scout uniform when a child graduates into a troop. Adultleaders who earned the Arrow of Light rank when they were young may alsoshow their achievement by wearing a special square knot on their adultuniform.
